Afterschool is excited to announce that our first Ecology Unit begins today!  We are especially proud of several elements of this unit.
  1. This is our first unit that has a service component. We've done food drives, but this is the first STEAM unit that focuses on and ends with a service project.
  2. Students at each site chose the specific topic for their site.  We wanted the topic to be something that interested students, and into which they could invest their sincere time and effort.
  3. Students also chose the culminating event, which will be held on EARTH DAY!
What, you may wonder, did the students choose? All our sites were interested in upcycling, or making useful things from "trash."
  • Faller students are focusing on plants, so they will be upcycling items into planters.  For their event, they will hold a recycling drive and sell their planters in order to purchase a tree to be planted at Faller Elementary school.
  • Inyokern students were concerned with textile waste.  Students will be taking discarded, ruined clothing, some donated by DART, and turning them into new items.  Some groups will learn to sew.  For their event, Inyokern students will host a free clothing exchange.  Bring used, clean clothing, and exchange for new (to you) items.
  • Pierce students were interested in the waste produced by the toy industry.  They will make toys from "trash," and will hold a free toy exchange. Pierce will also be doing a bit of sewing, making stuffed toys.  Donate clean, gently used toys and trade.
If you are doing any Spring cleaning, we could use donations of clothing, toys, recyclables, fabric, laundry detergent bottles & other small items.  If you have donations or questions, you can contact me or the supervisors of the sites.
