Extended Learning Opportunities Program
"ELOP"

-Expanded Learning Opportunities Program Outline-

The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) provides funding for afterschool and summer school enrichment programs for transitional kindergarten through sixth grade.
“Expanded learning” means before school, after school, summer, or intersession learning programs that focus on developing the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs and interests of pupils through hands-on, engaging learning experiences. It is the intent of the Legislature that expanded learning programs are pupil-centered, results driven, include community partners, and complement, but do not replicate, learning activities in the regular school day and school year.
LawCalifornia Education Code (EC) Section 46120 amended by AB 181 (Chapter 52, Statutes of 2022), AB 185 (Chapter 571, Statutes of 2022), SB 114 (Chapter 48, Statutes of 2023), and AB 176 (Chapter 998, Statutes of 2024).

STEAM education stands for "Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics," essentially combining traditional STEM subjects with the arts to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through a more holistic learning approach by integrating artistic expression with scientific inquiry; it emphasizes making connections between seemingly disparate disciplines to prepare students for real-world applications.

From the Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools:
"According to the U.S. Surgeon General, regular physical activity is one of the most important ways to maintain and improve one’s physical health, mental health, and overall well-being. A student who participates in physical education is more likely to become a healthy adult who is motivated to remain healthy and physically active throughout his or her life.

The physical education model content standards represent the essential skills and knowledge that all students need to maintain a physically active, healthy lifestyle. California law clearly establishes the priority of physical education instruction. Education Code Section 51210 requires 200 minutes of physical education every ten school days for students in grades one through six."

At High Desert Leapin' Lizards, we want afterschool students to get a minimum of 20 minutes of physical activity a day,
but we also want that 20 minutes to be fun.
We believe that physical education that is fun and engaging creates a positive connection to physical activity,
and is more likely to build students with lifelong healthy habits.
