The After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program is the result of the 2002 voter-approved initiative, Proposition 49. This proposition amended California Education Code (EC) Section 8482 to expand and rename the former Before and After School Learning and Safe Neighborhood Partnerships Program. The ASES Program funds the establishment of local after school education and enrichment programs. These programs are created through partnerships between schools and local community resources to provide literacy, academic enrichment and safe constructive alternatives for students in transitional  kindergarten through ninth grade (K–9). Funding is designed to: (1) maintain existing before and after school program funding; and (2) provide eligibility to all elementary and middle schools that submit quality applications throughout California. The current funding level for the ASES program is $794 million.
The purpose of the ASES Program is to create incentives for establishing locally-driven expanded learning programs, including after school programs that partner with public schools and communities to provide academic and literacy support, and safe, constructive alternatives for youth. The ASES Program involves collaboration among parents, youth, and representatives from schools, governmental agencies, individuals from community-based organizations, and the private sector.

From the Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools:
"According to the U.S. Surgeon General, regular physical activity is one of the most important ways to maintain and improve one’s physical health, mental health, and overall well-being. A student who participates in physical education is more likely to become a healthy adult who is motivated to remain healthy and physically active throughout his or her life.

The physical education model content standards represent the essential skills and knowledge that all students need to maintain a physically active, healthy lifestyle. California law clearly establishes the priority of physical education instruction. Education Code Section 51210 requires 200 minutes of physical education every ten school days for students in grades one through six."

At High Desert Leapin' Lizards, we want afterschool students to get a minimum of 20 minutes of physical activity a day,
but we also want that 20 minutes to be fun.
We believe that physical education that is fun and engaging creates a positive connection to physical activity,
and is more likely to build students with lifelong healthy habits.

STEAM education stands for "Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics," essentially combining traditional STEM subjects with the arts to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through a more holistic learning approach by integrating artistic expression with scientific inquiry; it emphasizes making connections between seemingly disparate disciplines to prepare students for real-world applications.

-Social-Emotional Learning-

Social emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing skills to understand and manage one's own emotions, build positive relationships with others, make responsible decisions, and effectively navigate social situations, ultimately contributing to success in school and life; key components include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making
You are always responsible for how you act, no matter how you feel
